Meditation: The Reversal of the Mind
Meditation is not merely breathing in and breathing out with awareness. It is the absence of the restless mind.
Ordinarily, the mind is in constant motion, flowing outward through the senses toward the world of objects, desires, and thoughts. This is the downward movement—from head to foot, the southern direction.
Meditation is the complete reversal of this movement. The outward-flowing current turns inward. Awareness withdraws from the senses and returns to its source. This is the upward journey—from foot to head, the northern direction.
The northern direction is not a geographical location. It is the direction of consciousness returning to its origin. When the mind ceases its outward wandering and turns inward, silence dawns. In that silence, meditation happens.
Meditation is not the cultivation of thought but the transcendence of thought. It is not merely mindful breathing; it is the dissolution of the mind into pure awareness.
When the outward journey ends, the inward journey begins. The southern direction becomes the northern direction. The seeker discovers that the destination has always been within.
